Barrier played equally well as villains or as a good guy as he is here. Another fine role for him even though he only has one scene is in Cyrano de Bergerac where he plays the very sly and all knowing and discerning Cardinal Richelieu.
Of course Phantom of the Opera is really made by the performance of Claude Rains as the mild mannered, inoffensive Eric Claudin, a violinist in the Paris Opera who is crushing out big time on Susanna Foster.
We see him first being told after 20 years he's being given the sack by the company. What they describe sounds an awful lot like Carpel Tunnel Syndrome that he's developed which is affecting his playing the violin.
Bad news for Susanna Foster also because he's been her secret benefactor in paying for voice lessons. There isn't any middle aged man who doesn't identify with Rains.
Tossed out of his job, the rent due, crushing out big time on a young girl, a lot of us have been there. Then when he thinks an unscrupulous music publisher is stealing a concerto he's written, he loses it completely and kills him.
And when acid is thrown in his face disfiguring him, it's a short journey to madness. Rains really makes us feel for Claudin.
In that sense the film is not a horror picture in that we're dealing with monsters or unworldly creatures that Universal so specialized in.
The man who becomes the Phantom is all too real, too human, and if we're pushed right, could be any one of us. Can you do better than opera arias by Nelson Eddy and a classic performance by Claude Rains?

Because of the preview audience's poor reaction, the studio decided to change the ending to a more exciting one.
Edward Sedgwick was hired to provide a climactic chase scene, with an ending in which the Phantom, after having saved Ledoux and Raoul, kidnaps Christine in Raoul's carriage.

There are several versions of these prints, but none is complete. All are from the original domestic camera negative.
Because of the better quality of the Eastman House print, many home video releases have opted to use it as the basis of their transfers.
This version has singer Mary Fabian in the role of Carlotta. In the reedited version, Virginia Pearson, who played Carlotta in the film, is credited and referred to as "Carlotta's Mother" instead.
Most of the silent footage in the version is actually from a second camera, used to photograph the film for foreign markets and second negatives; careful examination of the two versions shows similar shots are slightly askew in composition in the version.
For the Image Entertainment— Photoplay Productions two-disc DVD set, the soundtrack was reedited in an attempt to fit the Eastman House print as best as possible.
There is no corresponding "man with lantern" sequence on the sound discs. The film was also reedited, combining elements from the version with the sound release.
A 3D anaglyph version is included as an additional special feature. It is uncertain for what purpose the negative used to strike the Eastman House print was produced, as it includes footage from the sound reissue, and shows few signs of wear or damage.
For unknown reasons, an opening prologue showing a man with a lantern has been added—using a single continuous take—but no corresponding title cards or dialogue survive.
While it was common practice to simultaneously shoot footage with multiple cameras for prints intended for domestic and foreign markets, the film is one of few for which footage of both versions survives others include Buster Keaton 's Steamboat Bill, Jr.
These versions were meant to cash in on the talkie craze; by anything with sound did well at the box office, while silent films were largely ignored by the public.
Since the films included synchronized music and sound effect tracks, they could be advertised as sound pictures, and therefore capitalize on the talkie craze in foreign markets without the expense of reshooting scenes with dialogue in foreign languages.
To make an international version, the studio would simply replace any spoken dialogue in the film with music, and splice in some title cards in the appropriate language.
Singing sequences were left intact, as well as any sound sequences without dialogue. The surviving sound discs of The Phantom of the Opera belong to the domestic release, but do not synchronize with the dialogue portions of the film, which have been abbreviated on the Eastman House print.
Furthermore, for international sound versions, one negative was generally made for all of Europe, sent overseas, and not returned.
During the transition to sound in , it was not uncommon for two versions of a picture, one silent and one sound, to play simultaneously particularly for a movie from Universal, which kept a dual-format policy longer than most studios.
One possibility is that the Eastman House print is actually a silent version of the reissued film, made for theaters not yet equipped with sound.
However, according to trade journals of the time, no silent reissue was available. Harrison's Reports , which was always careful to specify whether or not a silent version of a movie was made, specifically stated that "there will be no silent version.
Nevertheless, if the extant print is a silent version, it would explain why Universal still had it and also the lack of wear on the negative from which it was struck.
According to Harrison's Reports , when the film was originally released, it contained 17 minutes of color footage; this footage was retained in the part-talking version.
As with many films of the time, black-and-white footage was tinted various colors to provide mood. These included amber for interiors, blue for night scenes, green for mysterious moods, red for fire, and yellow sunshine for daylight exteriors.
In The Phantom of the Opera was added to the United States National Film Registry , having been deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

Newcomer Emmy Rossum gives a stunning performance as Christine, capturing the character's youth and innocence, and Gerard Butler's depicting of the Phantom embodies the character's tortured soul and disillusionment.
The sets and costumes are also extraordinary, creating an immersive, fantastical world that's breathtaking. Yet the stylistic tone never overwhelms the story, but instead services to heighten its romanticism, and the themes of social alienation and artificial reality.
Translating a musical to cinema is a difficult task, however not only does director Joel Schumacher succeed brilliantly, the visual style of The Phantom of the Opera excesses Webber's stage production.

Man, this novel has been adapted to death, then back again actually in the form of a phantom, then back to death again, but now, we've got ourselves a little twist Speaking of finally getting the musical version, this is certainly Joel Schumacher's big return to the magical world of musicals, only this time, he's actually dealing with white people problems instead of trying to be "that white guy" who does a black film, which is probably why this film got better reviews other than "Sparkle", which isn't to say that this film's reviews have been all that glowing.
Man, I certainly don't agree with the Rotten Tomatoes consensus, but I love how it goes on and on about how the film is "histrionic, boring, and lacking in both romance and danger", and then they turn right around and basically say, "Oh yeah, but it looks pretty".
Man, that poor son of Scot just isn't doing it for the critics when it comes to romances and, well, that's good, because his romantic comedies deserve it.
A film like this, on the other, regardless of what the critics say, is what Butler and Schumacher should be gunning more for.
Still, make no mistake, this operatic opus hardly goes unhaunted. Now, we're talking about a Joel Schumacher-directed and written adaptation of a musical adaptation of a romantic drama dealing with an opera here, so it's not like you can't see corny coming, yet that hardly makes the cheesiness any less problematic, for although some fluffiness gets to be snappy, all too often, it's more along the lines of sappy, turning in some cornball set pieces and dialogue that momentarily take you out of the film, though perhaps not as much as much of the forced musicality.
The musical aspects that drive this film heavily are indeed competently crafted enough to aid in the final product's being as rewarding as it is, yet the incorporation of the musical goes plagued by a bit of inorganic forcefulness that not only overwhelms certain set pieces with profound prominence of musicality that distances you from reality considerably, as well as over-the-top flashiness to exacerbate the already pretty well-established cheesy aspects, but leaves the plotting that should be built around the music rather than more along the lines of a slave to the musical aspects to come off as more awkwardly manufactured than fluid.
The musicality's driving the plot along isn't quite as awkward as I expected, yet awkwardness is there, and common within the musical aspects, and with the musical aspects being so exceedingly prominent in the story structure, you better believe that this film's plotting is often rather problematic.
