TROY - Achilles and Odysseus Opens gate to Troy *HD ''2004 film''

He plays old King Priam of Troy, who at night ventures outside his walls and into the enemy camp, surprising Achilles in his tent.

Achilles has defeated Priam's son Hector in hand-to-hand combat before the walls of Troy, and dragged his body back to camp behind his chariot.

Now Priam asks that the body be returned for proper preparation and burial. This scene is given the time and attention it needs to build its mood, and we believe it when Achilles tells Priam, "You're a far better king than the one who leads this army.

As for the Greek cities themselves, a cliche from the old Hollywood epics has remained intact. This is the convention that whenever a battle of great drama takes place, all the important characters have box seats for it.

When Achilles battles Hector before the walls of Troy, for example, Priam and his family have a sort of viewing stand right at the front of the palace, and we get the usual crowd reaction shots, some of them awkward closeups of actresses told to look grieved.

In a way, "Troy" resembles " The Alamo. Both are defeated because of faulty night watchmen. The Mexicans sneak up on the Alamo undetected, and absolutely nobody is awake to see the Greeks climbing out of the Trojan Horse.

One difference between the two movies is that Billy Bob Thornton and the other "Alamo" actors are given evocative dialogue, and deliver it well, while "Troy" provides dialogue that probably cannot be delivered well because it would sound even sillier that way.

City Hall Peter Sobczynski. Ashamed of his actions, Achilles agrees and also states that Hector was the best he had ever fought.

He allows Briseis to return to Troy with Priam, promising a twelve-day truce so that Hector's funeral rites may be held in peace.

He also orders his men to return home without him after apologizing to Eudorus for striking him. Agamemnon declares that he will take Troy regardless of the cost.

Concerned, Odysseus concocts a plan to infiltrate the city. After seeing a carving of a horse by a Greek soldier, he has the Greeks build a gigantic wooden horse as a peace offering and abandon the Trojan beach, hiding their ships in a nearby cove.

Despite objections from Paris who requests for it to be burned down, Priam orders the horse be brought into the city after Archeptolemus views it as a gift intended for calming the gods.

A Trojan scout later finds the Greek ships hiding in the cove, but he was quickly shot down as he was about to alert the city.

That night, Greeks hiding inside the horse emerge, attacking the sleeping Trojans by surprise and open the city gates for the Greek army, commencing the Sack of Troy.

While Andromache and Helen guide the Trojans to safety through the tunnel, Paris gives the Sword of Troy to a young boy named Aeneas , instructing him to protect the Trojans and find them a new home.

Agamemnon kills Priam and captures Briseis, who then kills Agamemnon using a concealed knife in her hand. Achilles fights his way through the city and reunites with Briseis after killing the two Greek soldiers.

Paris, seeking to avenge his brother, shoots an arrow through Achilles' heel and then several into his body. Achilles extracts all the arrows but the one in his heel.

He then bids farewell to Briseis, and watches her flee with Paris before dying. In the aftermath, Troy is finally taken by the Greeks and a funeral is held for Achilles, where Odysseus personally cremates his body, while the surviving Trojans flee to Mount Ida.

The role eventually went to Rose Byrne. So I was put in Troy. I made my own mistakes in it. What am I trying to say about Troy?

I could not get out of the middle of the frame. It was driving me crazy. Das Boot is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, Troy became a commercial kind of thing.

There was no mystery. Composer Gabriel Yared originally worked on the score for Troy for over a year, having been hired by the director, Wolfgang Petersen.

Tanja Carovska provided vocals on various portions of the music, as she later would on composer James Horner's version of the soundtrack. However, the reactions at test screenings which used an incomplete version of the score were negative, and in less than a day Yared was off the project without a chance to fix or change his music.

He used Carovska's vocals again and also included traditional Eastern Mediterranean music and brass instruments.

Horner also collaborated with American singer-songwriter Josh Groban and lyricist Cynthia Weil to write an original song for the film's end credits.

The product of this collaboration, "Remember", was performed by Groban with additional vocals by Carovska. The soundtrack for the film was released on May 11, , through Reprise Records.

The score of the film was changed dramatically, with many of the female vocals being cut. An addition to the music is the use of Danny Elfman 's theme for Planet of the Apes during the pivotal fight between Hector and Achilles in front of the Gates of Troy.

Josh Groban's song was removed from the end credits as well. Various shots were recut and extended. For instance, the love scene between Helen and Paris was reframed to include more nudity of Diane Kruger.

The love scene between Achilles and Briseis is also extended. Only one scene was removed: the scene where Helen tends to the wound of Paris is taken out.

The battle scenes were also extended, depicting more violence and gore, including much more of Ajax's bloody rampage on the Trojans during the initial attack by the Greek Army.

Perhaps most significant was the sacking of Troy, barely present in the theatrical cut, but shown fully here, depicting the soldiers raping women and murdering babies.

Characters were given more time to develop, specifically Priam and Odysseus , the latter being given a humorous introduction scene.

More emphasis is given to the internal conflict in Troy between the priests, who believe in omens and signs from the gods to determine the outcome of the war, and military commanders, who believe in practical battle strategies to achieve victory.

Lastly, bookend scenes were added: the beginning being a soldier's dog finding its dead master and the end including a sequence where the few surviving Trojans escape to Mount Ida.

In one of the commentary sequences, the film's writer, David Benioff, said that when it came to deciding whether to follow The Iliad or to do what was best for the film, they always decided with what was best for the film.

Troy was released on DVD on January 4, This made Troy one of the most expensive films produced in modern cinema. It was screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

It was the 8th highest-grossing film of and currently is in the top highest-grossing films of all time. Troy was met with mixed reviews from critics.

The site's consensus describes the film as "A brawny, entertaining spectacle, but lacking emotional resonance. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Achilles is all of these things. He mopes on the flanks of the Greek army with his own independent band of fighters, carrying out a separate diplomatic policy, kind of like Ollie North.

He thinks Agamemnon is a poor leader with bad strategy and doesn't really get worked up until his beloved cousin Patroclus Garrett Hedlund is killed in battle.

Patroclus, who looks a little like Achilles, wears his helmet and armor to fool the enemy, and until the helmet is removed everyone thinks that Achilles has been slain.

So dramatic is that development that the movie shows perhaps , men in hand-to-hand combat, and then completely forgets them in order to focus on the Patroclus battle scene, with everybody standing around like during a fight on the playground.

Pitt is a good actor and a handsome man, and he worked out for six months to get buff for the role, but Achilles is not a character he inhabits comfortably.

Say what you will about Charlton Heston and Victor Mature , but one good way to carry off a sword-and-sandal epic is to be filmed by a camera down around your knees, while you intone quasi-formal prose in a heroic baritone.

Pitt is modern, nuanced, introspective; he brings complexity to a role where it is not required. By treating Achilles and the other characters as if they were human, instead of the larger-than-life creations of Greek myth, director Wolfgang Petersen miscalculates.

What happens in Greek myth cannot happen between psychologically plausible characters. That's the whole point of myth.

Great films like Michael Cacoyannis' " Elektra ," about the murder of Agamemnon after the Trojan War, know that and use a stark dramatic approach that is deliberately stylized.

Of course, "Elektra" wouldn't work for a multiplex audience, but then maybe it shouldn't. The best scene in the movie has Peter O'Toole creating an island of drama and emotion in the middle of all that plodding dialogue.

The film begins with Agamemnon , king of Mycenae , having subdued all the Greek kingdoms except Thessaly. The two sides have summoned armies to meet on the field of battle, but Agamemnon proposes single combat between two champions.

The king of Thessaly summons Boagrius, while Agamemnon summons Achilles. Although Achilles is unwilling to fight for Agamemnon, Nestor persuades him to do so, saying he can save hundred of men by fighting Boagrius.

Achilles kills Boagrius and Agamemnon gains dominion over Thessaly. Paris and Helen , Menelaus' wife secretly go upstairs, where it is revealed they have been having an affair.

Helen expresses fear because Paris and Hector leave the next day, but Paris has a plan to rescue Helen.

The two lovers run away, with Paris smuggling Helen on board a vessel bound for Troy. He later shows her to his brother, who thinks of sending her back, but realises that Paris will only follow her.

The ship continues to Troy. Menelaus, having discovered his wife's flight, has approached his brother for help. He convinces Agamemnon to attack Troy, Agamemnon agrees because he sees this as an opportunity to control shipping in the Aegean by destroying the most important city on the coast of Asia Minor.

Agamemnon commands the Greek kings to assemble their forces but Nestor notes that Troy has never fallen before and convinces him that they need Achilles.

Odysseus , king of Ithaca , is sent to Phthia to convince Achilles to join Agamemnon. While there, he meets Patroclus , Achilles' cousin and student.

Achilles also meets his mother Thetis , who warns him that if he remains he will live a long happy life but will not be remembered.

If he goes to Troy, he will find everlasting glory and renown but will die. Wanting to be remembered, Achilles chooses to go to Troy, summoning his Myrmidons, including Patroclus.

Hector, Paris arrive in Troy, where they are greeted by their father, King Priam and their cousin Briseis.

Priam is disappointed in Paris' actions but accepts Helen nonetheless. Helen warns Paris that Agamemnon and Menelaus will come for her, but Paris intends to challenge Menelaus to single combat.

The combined Greek forces arrive the next day, with the Myrmidons taking the beach of Troy and desecrating the temple to Apollo.

During this act of sacrilege, Achilles has Apollo's priests killed and takes Briseis, an acolyte in the temple, as his prisoner. Agamemnon, hearing of Achilles' prize, takes her for himself, angering Achilles, who forces his troops to stay out of the war.

The Greek and Trojan armies assemble outside Troy and Paris challenges Menelaus to single combat during a truce. Although having never been in battle, Paris is confident and uses the sword of Troy, a legendary sword used by Priam and his ancestors.

Hector advises Paris to defend himself so that Menelaus will tire himself out, but Menelaus is able to remove Paris' shield and cut his thigh, leaving the Trojan prince to limp to his brother.

Menelaus and Agamemnon fail to persuade Hector to leave Paris on the field of battle and Agamemnon claims the truce has been violated.

Menelaus is killed by Hector after attempting to kill Paris, who is clinging to the feet of Hector. Troy was directed by Wolfgang Peterson, whose vision birthed films like Das Boot into cinematic history and others like In the Line of Fire and Outbreak, as ones barely remembered.

Okay, time for a history lesson. Well, sort of. The Trojan War was a conflict between the nation of Greece and the nation of Troy, which is modern day Turkey.

The conflict was started after Helen of Sparta was taken by Paris of Troy to be his new wife. The war served as a major event in Greek mythology as most accounts of it are mired in legend, with major deities playing decisive roles in the outcome of events.

Stop fucking around with the humans, sheesh. Troy, the film, took an interesting angle by leaving all of that godly nonsense out.

Troy wanted to present the facts of the Trojan War in the most sober way possible. Hector, played by Eric Bana and Paris, played by Orlando Bloom, are sent to Sparta to negotiate a deal that would end a long, bloody feud between Sparta and Troy.

Sounds good. People may recognize Agamemnon as the center of a trilogy of tragedies that see terrible things befall his family following this war.

Agamemnon has his own personal warrior Achilles, played by Brad Pitt, who is really just a big whiny kid who knows how to kill really well. This is sort of not fair as his mother was a sea nymph and daughter to some obscure sea god.

Achilles is sort of a sleeper demigod with the weight of the world upon his chiseled back. Watching Troy ten years later reveals how the careers of the major players has panned out.

Orlando Bloom was also experiencing massive stardom after just appearing three years earlier with the first Lord of the Rings trilogy followed by the first of 20 Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Take these two stars and compare them to, Diane Kruger, playing Helen, whose career slowly unraveled into television in the next decade.

Add to this the odd angles of Sean Bean, Brian Cox, and Eric Bana and one has an ensemble film with a cast of people either coming or going.

Yes, long before , men making strategic turtle shell formations was taking place. Troy mostly centers around the bruising exploits of Achilles, who is trying to find himself in the hell of war.
